Student Computer Specifications
ISMMS (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai) recommends a laptop computer for information access, instructional applications, and official communications - in class and at home. We do not require a specific brand of laptop computer, however, as mentioned below, discounts will be available for certain computer brands if purchased through school channels. Students must pay attention to the requirements provided for their computer to be of sufficient processing power and resolution to meet their academic needs. A range of laptop computer configurations (described as Minimal to Optimal) are acceptable. Both Apple and PC computers are acceptable.
Note: Chromebooks and non-Pro versions of Surface tablets are NOT recommended, as they cannot be used for certain required applications
· Minimum Configuration: This is the least expensive configuration that will meet the school's requirements.
· Optimum Configuration: This configuration more than meets the school's requirements and has capabilities that will be useful while at medical or graduate school.
FAQs?
My current laptop computer is close to (but does not exactly meet) the minimum standards. Do I have to buy a new one?
You can begin school with your current laptop computer and see if it is adequate to meet your needs. If access to and display of complex media (such as images or video) is a problem, you may need to reconsider the purchase of a new system.
Should I buy a PC or Apple computer?
Both platforms are supported. The school has discounted pricing available for Dell and Mac laptops and details can be found here.
Printing
Much of the course material is only available on the course website and can be printed from there. Library printers are available for a printing fee if you do not have your own. Current Library printing fees can be found here.
Software
Microsoft and Adobe products can be purchased by students directly from the JourneyEd software store.
Security
All student devices will be subject to the security compliance standards set by the MSHS IT department when using the on-campus network or when remotely connecting to any school or hospital network resource. Please contact or visit the Academic IT Support Center to ensure your devices will be able to use the network without issue.
